Through the early 1990s, Audi began to move more towards the position of being a real competitor in its target market against global luxury leaders Mercedes-Benz and BMW. This began with the release of the Audi V8 in 1990. It was essentially a new engine fitted to the Audi 100/200, but with noticeable bodywork differences. Most obvious was the new grille that was now incorporated in the bonnet.<br /><br />By 1991, Audi had the 4 cylinder Audi 80, the 5 cylinder Audi 90 and Audi 100, the turbocharged Audi 200 and the Audi V8. With the introduction of an all-new Audi 100 in 1992, Audi introduced a 2.8L V6 engine. This engine was also fitted to a face-lifted Audi 80 (all 80 and 90 models were now badged 80 except for the USA), giving this model a choice of 4, 5 and 6 cylinder engines, in saloon/sedan, coupé and Cabriolet body styles.<br /><br />The 5 cylinder was soon dropped as a major engine choice; however, a turbocharged 230 hp (169 kW) version remained. The engine, initially fitted to the 200 quattro 20V of 1991, was a derivative of the engine fitted to the Sport Quattro. It was fitted to the Audi Coupé, and named the S2 and also to the Audi 100 body, and named the S4. The rear underfloor-mounted engine was innovative. This sports car’s quest takes buyers back to the 1950s, by evoking the classic 300SL coupe, including its space-age gullwing doors. But the SLS’s greatest misfortune — aside from its uninspired rear-end styling — is to have landed plop into the still-sour economy of 2010. Any megaplex denizen could have told Mercedes that a $200,000 sports car should have set course for, oh, the dot-com bubble of 1999.<br /><br />And that’s what’s great about the 2011 SLS. As the first car created entirely by the company’s AMG performance division (rather than adapted from a civilian Mercedes), the SLS can’t match the visual fantasia of the scissor-doored SLR, or that car’s terminal speed of 207 miles per hour. (A mere 197 m.p.h. must suffice.) Yet I had more fun driving the SLS because I felt much more confident in it, my mind focused on the next curve and not on indemnity clauses. Since various SLR McLarens were priced between $450,000 and roughly $1 million — the latter for the Stirling Moss Roadster edition — Mercedes might argue that a supercar replacement that starts at $185,750 is, by comparison, a recession-priced Kia. As it stands, Mercedes will be satisfied if roughly 300 Americans ante up for an SLS in its first year.<br /><a name='more'></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><object height="350" width="600"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nB_zQlVbxAQ&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nB_zQlVbxAQ&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="600" height="350"></embed></object></div><br />Those buyers will get an appealing 563-horsepower mix of ferocity and luxury, with a decidedly Germanic style that is very different from the usual Italian supercar. Whereas many Ferraris or Lamborghinis mount their engines behind the driver, the Mercedes takes the approach of front-engine, long-snout classics like the Jaguar E-Type.<br /><br />But another front-engine monster, the Dodge Viper, came to mind when I stared down the SLS’s mammoth hood: it’s like a Stonehenge monolith tipped on its side.<br /><br />That hood is something to behold, along with those sky-walking doors. Wherever I swung them open, a crowd magically appeared to gawk and snap photos. The price for this instant conversation-starter is clumsy entry and exit over bench-size door sills, and the odd whack of the noggin against the raised portals. Once seated, shorter occupants stretch and strain to reach the raised door handles, though Mercedes plans to offer helpful grab straps at an unspecified date.<br /><br />The other con is the thick front roof pillars that block too much of the view. As for safety, if the SLS should ever land on its roof, pyrotechnic charges blow out the doors’ hinge bolts, allowing occupants or rescuers to free the doors.<br /><br />The SLS looks so bodacious from the front that you almost wish Mercedes had grafted the hood onto the back, so you could enjoy the view in stereo. But after the magnificence of that six-foot-long proboscis, the rear is a bland vestigial tail, with a tucked-in spoiler that rises above 75 m.p.h. <br /><br />Where the original ’50s Gullwing was wrapped in elektron, a magnesium alloy, the SLS’s chassis and body are entirely aluminum, aside from a composite decklid. Other fat-trimmers include a carbon-fiber driveshaft that weighs a mere 9 pounds, and optional ceramic composite brakes. At 3,573 pounds, the Mercedes weighs about 300 less than the largely carbon-fiber SLR McLaren, and a remarkable 700 less than the SL63 roadster. The SLS’s power-to-weight ratio tops the Aston Martin DBS and Porsche 911 Turbo (though the Porsche’s all-wheel-drive makes it faster), and it’s within sight of the Ferrari 599 GTB.<br /><br />The SLS is a screamer: 3.5 seconds from 0 to 60 miles per hour, according to Car and Driver magazine, and 11.6 seconds in the quarter-mile.<br /><br /><br />The SLS’s 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual is the latest. Driven in Comfort mode, the transmission can smooth out gear changes a bit too much for the impatient driver, especially while trundling in traffic. The Sport Sharp or Manual settings take care of that, snapping off shifts in less than 100 milliseconds.<br /><br />There’s also a welcome Sport setting for the stability-control system, which shows off both the SLS’s surprisingly high limits and smooth recovery when the tires do break loose.<br /><br />The Mercedes still can’t match the steering feedback of a typical Porsche, or the hard-core purity of exotics like a midengine Ferrari. That judgment was reinforced when I happened to hop from the Mercedes into the new Porsche Boxster Spyder. There’s still a bit of the old grand-touring Gullwing in this Mercedes’s blood, a recognition that the SLS will spend more time at fancy hotels than in racetrack paddocks.<br /><br />That message is evident inside: the SLS is rich, bedecked in soft leather, aluminum and optional carbon fiber. But aside from some details — including aircraft-style aluminum vents — the mature cabin assures a Mercedes-Benz buyer that he hasn’t gone crazy from a midlife crisis. Chevrolet Europe wants the staff to train with the hand shake which might be telling you lot of things. This handshake study, headed by a professor of psychological sciences at the University of Manchester, that seeks the formula for the perfect handshake. Hot hands (1 per cent)<br /><br />*Other (1 per cent)<br /><br />REGIONAL AND GENDER DIFFERENCES<br />Although three quarters of Brits (73 per cent) say the handshake is an important social gesture in the modern world, 22 per cent of those polled in East Anglia want to get rid of the custom.<br /><br />People polled in London and the South West said they shake 5.4 hands a week on average, while East Anglia came out the lowest with the average person only shaking 3.6 hands a week. South Westerners also said they were the most confident when it came to delivering handshakes (34 per cent are completely confident). In contrast, 5 per cent of people in the North East have no confidence at all in their handshakes.<br /><br />Men shake on average 6.2 hands a week, compared to only 2.6 for women. A third of women (32 per cent) said that the number of hands they shook per week was zero, compared to just one in 20 (6 per cent) of men. One in five men (17 per cent) shake hands more than ten times a week, compared to less than one in 40 (2 per cent) women.<br /><br />This could be because over half of men (57 per cent) said they enjoyed the act of shaking hands, while less than one in three women (29 per cent) said the same. When faced with an outstretched hand, half of women (50 per cent) said sweaty palms were the biggest turn-off while only a third of men (32 per cent) agreed. Men identified having a limp wrist or loose grip was the worst handshake faux pas (42 per cent).<br /><br />FIVE FAMOUS HANDSHAKES IN HISTORY<br />Archaeological ruins show that handshaking was practiced in ancient Greece as far back as the 5th Century BC as a gesture of peace by demonstrating the hand held no weapon. Researchers credit Sir Walter Raleigh with introducing the act to the Western World during the late 16th Century. John F. Kennedy thought it so important he commissioned an entire study to determine the most effective handshake he should use when meeting other world leaders.<br /><br />THE WORLD'S LONGEST HANDSHAKE<br />On 21 November 2009, Americans Matthew Rosen and Joe Ackerman broke the Guinness World Record for the world's longest handshake, shaking hands for 15 hours, 30 minutes and 45 seconds.<br /><br />JOHN HOWARD AND MARK LATHAM<br />In 2004 Australian Prime Minster John Howard had lost public trust going into a general election. His main political opponent was a newcomer called Mark Latham. A few days before the election John Howard and Mark Latham met at a radio interview and Latham shook the Prime Minister's hand in a very aggressive manner – pulling him close and staring him down. Footage of the handshake spread across the internet. Although public opinion of John Howard was at an all time low, people thought Mark Latham was a bully for the way he "roughed up" the PM. Latham lost the election. After the election the polls showed that the major reason people voted against Latham was because of his overly aggressive handshake.<br /><br />FRANKIE VALLI AND BOB GAUDIO<br />Singer Valli and songwriter Gaudio were the driving force behind The Four Seasons, one of the world's most successful pop groups, with hits including Walk Like A Man, December 1963 (Oh What A Night) and Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You had a deal based on a handshake – the "Jersey way" as Valli put it.<br /><br />BRITISH AND FRENCH CHANNEL TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION WORKERS<br />In December 1990, British and French workers finally met each other underneath the Channel for the first time. The footage of firm handshakes taking place through a narrow gap in the seabed was broadcast around the world and heralded the final phase of construction on the ambitious project.<br /><br />WAYNE BRIDGE AND JOHN TERRY<br />The most famous handshake of recent times is one that didn't happen. Convention dictated that Manchester City defender Wayne Bridge and Chelsea captain John Terry shook hands ahead of their match earlier this year, but following the love scandal that rocked their private lives, Bridge chose to very publically snub the outstretched hand of Terry. For up to the first 40 miles, the Volt is powered solely by electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery, using no fuel and producing no emissions. When the Volt's lithium-ion battery runs low, an engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 300 miles on a full tank of gas.<br /><a name='more'></a><br />The Volt battery pack will be assembled in Brownstown Township, Mich., and shipped to the Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Plant for mating with the Volt. Out of Court settlement by Ford over it Hybrid Tech similar to Paice Patent

Ford Co. reached an out-of-court settlement and avoided long term litigation on a patent infringement lawsuit with Paice.<br /><br />Both companies filed lawsuits against the other regarding a patented technology used in hybrid versions of the Ford Fusion sedan and Escape crossover.<br /><br />The dispute surrounds the same patent -- U.S. Patent No. 5,343,970 -- that Paice and Toyota Motor Corp. have been litigating over since 2005. Paice holds 11 U.S. patents related to hybrid-vehicle technology.<br /><br />“We are pleased to have reached an amicable resolution,” Ford and Paice executives said in a joint statement. Neither company would comment further.<br /><a name='more'></a><br /><br />Paice is an acronym for Power-Assisted Internal Combustion Engines. The patented technology uses both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor to supply torque for the vehicle.<br /><br />Paice had filed similar law suit against Japanese Auto maker Toyota in 2005,  that a component used in Toyota’s hybrids is "equivalent" to a device Paice patented in 1994. <br /><br />The Japanese automaker was ordered to pay royalties to Paice for the Toyota Prius, Toyota Highlander crossover and Lexus RX400h SUV.<br /><br />- Autonews Inputs
